In craft or industrial design I believe that nature holds many of the answers. As Leonardo da Vinci (1452 1519) once wrote, ‘In her (Nature’s) inventions nothing is lacking and nothing is superfluous’. I try always to approach my work with this in mind.
I design through making and experimentation with materials and would describe myself more as a creative maker than anything else.
The driving force behind my work is the creation of surface texture which I achieve by slip-casting porcelain in textured moulds. Porcelain is magnificently able to display delicate surfaces through its ability to highlight every nuance and minute detail. I use simple, organic forms and combine their simplicity of shape with the fineness and purity of porcelain.
My inspiration is drawn from many different sources and much of my work has been inspired by the intricately linen-wrapped mummies found in ancient Egyptian tombs.
People always ask, “Where do you get your ideas from?” The answer is never simple because they can come from anywhere at anytime. I use not only visual references but also, for example, processes involved in textile based crafts. Transferring techniques from one material to another allows one to break away from age-old traditions and to develop new and unique ways of working.
Most of my pieces are unglazed, reflecting my somewhat non-traditional approach to ceramics.
